Title: A Conversation About the State of Quality in Online Education

Abstract: When you visit a classroom, whether online, blended or face-to-face, most of us will quickly develop an opinion of whether the course is of high quality. However, defining and measuring quality can be extremely challenging. Furthermore, overall student perceptions of course quality can be impacted by the curriculum, course design, course content, delivery and even the LMS or the engagement level of their peers. This conversation will examine these challenges and discuss strategies for improving the perception of quality in online and blended education

Title: The Integration of Quality Matters – It All Began with Collaboration with Faculty

Abstract: This presentation discusses how one institution adopted Quality Matters through integration in faculty mentoring, course design, and professional programming. We will discuss our mentoring philosophy, an Online Course Design Matrix that links course goals and objectives directly to assessment, and the integration of Quality Matters into our professional programming.

Title: Maximizing The Online Environment in Africana Studies

Presenter: Jacquelyn Benton, MSU Denver

Abstract: In this session, I will demonstrate my incorporation of ten personalized lectures in my African Studies courses. I will also demonstrate my use of technology in my sections of Introduction to Africana Studies, through means of a Virtual Tour, and in the African Authors course through use of an Introductory video that orients students to countries on the African continent.

Title: Is your faculty training OSM?

Abstract: This summer, CU Online piloted a new 10-week, fully online faculty training program to prepare online instructors to excel in teaching, called Online Skills Mastery (OSM, pronounced "Awesome"). Learn how OSM is transforming faculty training by fostering hands-on, time-on-task approaches to professional development while also fitting more naturally into the life of a busy faculty member. Come see examples from OSM, and hear about the successes and lessons learned along the way.

Title: Multiple Online Quiz Attempts - Do They Help Student Performance?

Abstract: Additional exposure to content theoretically improves learning outcomes. To determine if taking weekly online quizzes up to three times affects exam scores, mean exam scores from two semesters were compared. In the first semester, weekly quizzes could only be taken once; in the subsequent semester quizzes could be taken up to three times with the highest score recorded. Exams could only be taken once in both semesters. There was no difference between overall mean exam scores in the two semesters. Analyses will be presented regarding impact of multiple quiz attempts on various student attributes including race/ethnicity, class standing, gender, and lower-performing students.

Title: Enhancing Teaching Effectiveness in an Online Classroom Using Textbook Companion Site

Presenter: Ting Jiang, MSU Denver

Abstract: In the past 20 years, major educational publishers have invested heavily on their online products, mainly, course and textbook companion sites. Products offered via these companion sites range from e-books to complex lecture modules and assessment tools. Pearson’s MyLab series, McGraw Hill’s Connect, Cengage’s Aplia and MindTap represent the leading products in this field. This presentation shares with the tri-institution community my experience of incorporating “CourseMate” (an online companion site for Cengage’s 4LTR Press series) into my online classroom via Blackboard. My experience shows that online companion sites, if smartly used, can great enhance teaching effectiveness in an online classroom.
