In Spring 2016, MSU Denver's Facilities Management and Information Technology Services (ITS) departments began an initiative prompted by a decision that the three institutions that share the Auraria Campus (MSU Denver, the University of Colorado Denver, and the Community College of Denver) should each manage their own telephone system, rather than leasing it from the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC). For additional information about this important decision, please see the Auraria Campus Telephone System Strategy.
We are currently in Phase 2 of the telecommunications initiative as described below:
Phase 1: Conduct a thorough inventory of the current telephones and jacks.
During the Summer 2016 semester, ITS compliled a complete and accurate inventory of all of the MSU Denver telephone jacks and telephones currently in use. The inventory will be used to scope the replacement phone solution, build out a new e911 database for emergency responders, and all the other details that a phone system requires.
Phase 2: Conduct a pilot test of the proposed telecommunication solution.
After researching the various phone systems and conducting a pilot test in the ITS department, it was determined that leveraging Microsoft’s Skype for Business (S4B) was the best solution as it provides customizable software with cutting-edge capabilities and one big advantage, it’s already included in MSU Denver’s Office 365 suite of applications. As part of the pilot, ITS staff tested the usage of S4B with various types of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phones/headsets to determine which type will best meet the needs of the University. The pilot revealed that the S4B solution improved call quality, provided built-in directory information, integrated voicemail with e-mail, added conferencing features, and has the convenience of self-configuration of features. S4B with VoIP phones/headsets will provide the University with a robust, unified communications solution including many useful features that aren’t available with our current phone system.
Phase 3: Distribute VoIP telephones and headsets University-wide.
Now that the new telecommunications solution has been chosen, in the coming months ITS will distribute VoIP phones to all University departments in planned phases. Communications has started and all departments will be contacted well in advance of receiving their new telephones and telephone numbers. As a reminder due to this new telephone solution, new telephone numbers will be assigned to replace most existing phone numbers.
