Student Involvement & Leadership Awards
Each year, over 35 individuals and groups are recognized for their efforts in creating community at MSU Denver through the Student Involvement & Leadership Awards.
This year's ceremony will take place Tuesday, April 9th at 5:30 pm in St. Cajetan's. Please make sure to RSVP to the event. Families and friends are encourage to attend in support of nominees and celebrate the accomplishments of our outstanding leaders at MSU Denver.
Award Criteria 2019
Student Organization Award Criteria
Presented to recognized Student Organizations at MSU Denver in good standing as of March 1, 2019. All organization awards are presented for unpaid work as a student organization. If paid work occurs, please nominate in student employee categories.
New Student Organization of the Year
Presented to an organization in its first year of existence. The organization should bring something unique to campus life, demonstrate healthy risk-taking opportunities, and make a positive impact on the campus community.
Event of the Year
The event of the year awards are presented to organizations for events that: a) provided opportunities for students to learn about themselves and others, b) gave students the primary role in planning, implementation, promotion and evaluation of the event, and c) promoted a sense of campus community and school spirit.
- Educational Event of the Year - Provided an academically focused program to the campus community
- Social Event of the Year - Provided outreach to the general public or the campus community
- Community Event of the Year - Focused on volunteerism and service to either the campus or outside community
- Multicultural Event of the Year - Focused on diversity education, understanding or promotion
- Fundraising Event of the Year - Awarded to the organization that has utilized their resources and creativity to gain additional financing for their organization
Student Organization Advisor of the Year
Presented to the MSU Denver faculty/staff member who has shown exemplary support to students and gone above and beyond the minimal responsibilities of the student organization advisor position. Through commitment to students, this mentor sets an example and works as an advocate for students among faculty and administration.
Outstanding Student Organization Member
This award is given to an individual who demonstrates special commitment and leadership to the organization. In nominating individuals, think of those members who will be difficult to replace due to their energy, efforts, or willingness to help move the organization forward. These individuals set an example for others to follow and help inspire others in the organization to get more involved.
Roadrunner Spirit Award
These awards are given to student groups for programs and leadership that may not fit into a traditional category or criteria. Examples include student organizations that have collaborated in unique and different way and student organizations that have taken a programmatic risk or challenged tradition.
Student Organization of the Year
Presented to the organization distinguishing itself as an example organization for others to follow.
Student Employee Award Criteria
Student employee awards are open to all student employees on campus who have maintained a 2.5 cumulative GPA while working at MSU Denver.
Outstanding Customer Service
Presented to a student who demonstrates exceptional customer service. He/she is friendly, dependable, and works hard to help all who come to the department. This student manages multiple tasks well and goes beyond expectations.
Outstanding Project – Educational
Presented for work done on an academic or education focused job or project that the student coordinated, facilitated, or managed independently and successfully.
Outstanding Project – Multicultural
Presented for work done on a single diversity/cultural focused job or project that the student coordinated, facilitated, or managed independently and successfully.
Outstanding Project - Service/Community
Presented for work done on a single community or volunteer focused job or project that the student coordinated, facilitated, or managed independently and successfully.
Employee of the Year
Honors the contributions of student employees who work to achieve the goals of MSU Denver and the work site. This student demonstrates commitment and growth in his/her position. The outstanding student employee goes beyond the stated job duties by taking initiative and advancing the goals of the department.
Outstanding Team Customer Service
Presented to a team of student employees demonstrating exceptional customer service. As a team, they are known as a resource on campus by other students with tremendous pride in customer service.
Outstanding Team Event or Project
Presented to a team of student employees for a project or effort spearheaded and implemented by students in the office or department helping to meet the mission and strategic plan at MSU Denver.
Roadrunner Spirit Student Employee Team
Awarded to a group of student employees for ongoing growth and contributions to the campus community in helping to meet with mission and strategic plan at MSU Denver.
Overall Leadership Award Criteria

Given to a student dedicated to boosting pride and spirit at MSU Denver
Roadrunner Leadership Award
These awards are given to students who may not fill other categories and who best exemplify the following general competencies:
- Cognitive complexity
- Knowledge Acquisition, Integration and Application
- Civic Engagement
- Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Competence
- Practical Competence
- Persistence and Academic Achievement
Stephen M. Hay Leadership Award
Named for the late Stephen M. Hay, this award is given to an outstanding student who’s worked to create meaningful change in the lives of other students at MSU Denver. Students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA, involvement in co-curricular programs, and a demonstrated commitment to increase student activism on campus.
Awards by Class Standing
These individual awards recognize outstanding senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman leadership demonstrated by contributions to the campus or in the community. These students set an example for other students and invested their own time to make a significant impact. They have shown creativity, initiative, potential and have taken risks as a student leader. Nominees must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
- Freshman Leadership Award - Under 30 credit hours.
- Sophomore Leadership Award - Minimum of 30 credit hours
- Junior Leadership Award - Minimum of 60 credit hours
- Senior Leadership Award - Minimum of 90 credit hours
- Graduate Student Leadership Award-Graduate Student in the 2018-2018 Academic Year
Fraternity & Sorority Leadership Award Criteria

Awards are presented to recognized Fraternities and Sororities for Excellence in the Following Areas:

Student Athlete Leadership Award Criteria
Selected by Staff in Intercollegiate Athletics
This award is presented to an MSU Denver student-athlete who has embodied the core values of MSU Denver – Community, Access, Diversity, Respect, Entrepreneurship (CADRE) – over the past year. the values can be shown in any number of ways including community service, student engagement, and campus participation. One male and one female award winner have been selected by the Department of Athletics.
