Brief description:

This award is for a student who demonstrates excellence in research and writing.  One award will be granted to a BSSW student and one award will be granted to an MSW student. In addition to being named the BSSW/MSW Social Work Scholar of 2017, students will receive an engraved plaque presented at the 2017 Honors Night ceremony on May 5th, 2017

Nominations:

Students are nominated by any Department of Social Work faculty member who has had the nominee in class. 

Nomination and Application Process:

All submissions are due to the Chair of the Student Awards Committee, Susie Ryder (sryder@msudenver.edu) by April 10th, 2017. The nominator submits the following:

  • Student’s name
  • MSU Denver ID number
  • Student’s email
  • The instructions for the paper from the instructor.
  • The student’s paper that demonstrates this nominee’s superior achievement in research and writing.
  • A brief statement (maximum 200 words) by the nominator as to the reason for their selection of this student for the award. The statement should explain how the student exemplifies excellence in research and writing.

Criteria:

A work product (i.e., paper) will comprise the key element for assessment, and as such, should be among the top papers in a given class.  Papers from classes with a major paper assignment that requires substantial independent work (e.g. theoretical exposition) and research (e.g., policy analysis, an empirical study) are eligible.  The student must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and must be in good standing in Social Work.

Additional criteria, for BSSW student: The student paper demonstrates superior writing and analytical skills and fully, comprehensively, and critically addresses all required elements for the course assignment.

Additional criteria, for MSW student: The student paper demonstrates superior writing and analytical skills and fully, comprehensively, and critically addresses all required elements for the course assignment, and research represents independent and creative work that contributes to the academic literature.

This award is for a student who has made a significant contribution to the Department of Social Work, as well as potentially, to the college, university, and/or local or global communities.  One award will be granted to a BSSW student and one award will be granted to an MSW student.  In addition to being awarded the BSSW/MSW Social Work Leadership Award of 2017, students will receive an engraved plaque presented at the 2017 Honors Night ceremony on May 5th, 2017

Students can be self-nominated, or may be nominated by a Department of Social Work faculty or staff member or by a fellow social work student.

Nomination and Application Process:

  • A statement (maximum 200 words) explaining why the nominee has selected this student for this award. The statement should detail the accomplishments of the nominee and the impact of those accomplishments on the Department of Social Work, college, and/or university.
  • Evidence of leadership (e.g., could be list of achievements, flyers from events, press release, etc.) that support the student’s specific contribution to the Social Work Department and explain the significance of that contribution to the department, as well as potentially the college, university, and/or local or global communities.

Criteria:

The student has made a significant contribution to academic and student life, vitality of their program or the Department of Social Work, and/or has made a substantial difference in the broader community.  The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must be in good standing in their program.

Brief description:

This award is for a student who has made a significant contribution in the advancement of human rights, peace, justice, or equality within the university, local or global communities. This award acknowledges students’ contributions towards the alleviation of social inequalities for marginalized communities, particularly based on race, class, sexuality, gender, ability status, and nationality. One award will be granted to a BSSW student and one award will be granted to an MSW student.  In addition to being awarded the BSSW/MSW Social Justice Advocate Award of 2017, students will receive an engraved plaque presented at the 2017 Honors Night ceremony on May 5th, 2017.

The student should embody the spirit of social justice in their speech and actions.  The student must have made a significant, specific, and demonstrable contribution, while a student in their current program, promoting human rights, peace, justice or equality within the Department of Social Work, as well as potentially, to the college, university, and/or local or global communities.  The student must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must be in good standing in their program.
