MSU Denver Department of Social Work Office of Field Education Logo

Field Education is considered the signature pedagogy of social work education; therefore, students will spend a substantial amount of time learning in an agency as part of the journey towards a BSSW and/or a MSW degree.

In the Field Experience, students will have the opportunity to integrate theoretical concepts and practice skills learned in the classroom, with practice in a community agency.  They will be asked to critically examine their interactions as professional social workers, and ask:

  1.  What social work skills were necessary during each interaction?
  2. What social work knowledge informed each interaction?
  3. What social work values influenced each interaction.

Students are not only expected to develop and practice sound social work skills, but also examine the influences of diversity, social justice, policy, ethics, and use of self on their practice.   Students are expected to engage in critically reflective practice.

All this is done under the guidance and teaching of a more experienced social work practitioner- the Field Instructor.

The information below is subject to change, but will provide a general outline of the Field Experience course:

BSSW students will spend 16 hours per week in an agency setting during their senior year (Field Experience I & II) for a total of 480 hours over 30 weeks. Each Semester is 15 weeks long.

MSW Program:

Foundation Year students will spend 16 hours per week in an agency setting during the first year (Field Experience I and II) for a total of 480 over 30 weeks.  Each semester is 15 weeks long.
