Field Placement Search Process


Information on the search process can be found below. Newly admitted students will receive an email on what to expect as they begin the field search process. Those who confirm their enrollments will also be sent specific instructions on how to get started. Any questions can be directed to field@msudenver.edu


Field Information Sessions

All students who will be taking a Field Experience Course in 2018-19 must attend a field information session. Check here for any upcoming info sessions. If you did not attend a field information session, please carefully review the FAQ for Students. Any questions can be directed to field@msudenver.edu.   



 


Search Process Timeline

INFORMATION - November to December
Students attend an information session to become familiar with and ask question about the placement process. 

SIGN UP - December 15th
Students will be emailed a sign-up link on Friday, Dec. 15th where they will select a meeting time (approximately 20 minutes) with the Field Office to discuss placement options. Meeting dates will be offered in late January and early February.

APPLICATION - December 15, 2016 to January 12, 2018
Students complete an application for field placement where they list both the skills and knowledge they hope to acquire in a placement, as well as populations, settings, and social issues they wish to gain more experience in. Students have the option of requesting specific agency placements.

MEETINGS & OPTIONS - January 8th to February 15th
Students will meet with the Field Office and receive at least three options for potential field placements.

PREPARE -January - February
Students carefully review Next Steps document (see Search Forms section below). Students begin updating resume and crafting cover letters.

CONTACT - February 5th
Students begin contacting agencies to request internship interviews on February 5th.

INTERVIEW & EVALUATE - February to June
Students interview at assigned agency sites so that both the agency and student can mutually determine if a placement is a good fit.

CONFIRMATION - July 3rd (or sooner)
Students notify Field Office of being offered and accepting a field placement.

STUDENT FIELD ORIENTATION - August 
Students will attend mandatory student field orientation during the first week of classes in lieu of field seminar class. They will meet with their field seminar instructor and go over field requirements and guidelines.

 

INFORMATION SESSION - November-December 

 


SIGN UP
Students attend a mandatory information session to become familiar with and ask question about the placement process. 

Students will be emailed a sign-up link within 3-5 days of enrollment confirmation being submitted, where they will select a meeting time with the Field Office to discuss placement options. Meeting dates will be offered in January/February. Students will also receive information on how to access the SONIA field database at this time.

APPLICATION - December
Students complete an application for field placement on SONIA where they list both the skills and knowledge they hope to acquire in a placement, as well as populations, settings, and social issues they wish to gain more experience in. Students have the option of requesting specific agency placements.

AGENCY DATABASE REVIEW & PLACEMENT PREFERENCING - February - June
Students access SONIA field database to review potential field placement options. Students select their top five placements that they'd like to interview at and indicate this in the SONIA field database. Field Office reviews placement preferences and approves them.
Newly Admitted Students: Students will be REQUIRED to meet with the Field Office to discuss placement preferences. When the students are emailed the SONIA field database instructions, they will also be emailed a link to sign up for a field meeting.

DISCUSS PLACEMENT OPTIONS - February - June
Students will attend their scheduled individual meeting with the Field Office to discuss options for potential field placements. After the meeting, the Field Office will approve the student's preferences in SONIA.

PREPARE & CONTACT
Once preferences are approved, agency contact information will be accessible to students in the SONIA database. Students carefully review Next Steps document (see Search Forms section below). Students update resume and craft cover letters and make contact with approved agencies to request internship interviews on February 5th.

Students interview at assigned agency sites so that both the agency and student can mutually determine if a placement is a good fit.

CONFIRMATION - July 2nd (or sooner)
Once students have been offered and accept a field placement, students must complete the Field Confirmation Form in SONIA to finalize the placement.

STUDENT FIELD ORIENTATION - August 
Students will attend mandatory student field orientation during the first week of classes in lieu of field seminar class. They will meet with their field seminar instructor and go over field requirements and guidelines.

Dates and Instructions for Students Newly Admitted into the MSW Program for the 2018-19 academic year are in blue. These dates are for students who received admissions notifications in April 2018.
