DENVER – Metropolitan State University of Denver announced today that it has received a $25,000 gift from MillerCoors to create the MillerCoors Endowed Water Stewardship Fellowship. The fellowship will be offered to students enrolled in Water Studies courses offered by MSU Denver’s One World One Water (OWOW) Center for Urban Water Education and Stewardship.
The fellowship will specifically support students pursuing capstone projects in water stewardship, with an emphasis on partnerships with water-stewardship professionals. This focus will deepen the OWOW Center’s work to educate present and future leaders about this critical natural resource. In addition to offering a Water Studies minor and courses available to students in any major, the OWOW Center fosters dialogue among local and state decision-makers to move toward an economically and environmentally balanced approach toward water stewardship.
“We are inspired by MillerCoors’ dedication to water protection and conservation, and thrilled to partner with them to offer this support for undergraduate research to MSU Denver students who aspire to play a key role in addressing Colorado’s unique water-related needs and challenges,” said Sandra Haynes, dean of the College of Professional Studies and the visionary behind the formation of the OWOW center.
In making the funding award, Gloria Schoch, Community Commerce and Partnerships Manager at MillerCoors, added, “We share the OWOW center’s mission of inspiring and preparing the next generation of water conservation leaders through experiential learning opportunities. MillerCoors is committed to conserving and improving water resources in Colorado and across the country in the communities where we operate.”
MillerCoors was recently awarded the prestigious 2013 U.S. Water Prize from the U.S. Water Alliance, in recognition of the company’s “innovative and comprehensive strategies to protect and conserve water throughout its lifecycle.” MillerCoors also achieved record-low water use across its eight breweries in 2013.
