WHAT: Metropolitan State College of Denver’s Excel Pre-Collegiate program is a collaborative effort between the College and select high schools in the Denver metro area to assisted students with college admissions and enrollment regardless of what institution they choose to attend. To participate students must be a senior in high school and express an interest in attending Metro State or another higher education institution.
The Excel Pre-Collegiate Program is an expansion of the Excel Outreach program, which was created more than 20 years ago. The Pre-Collegiate Program goals are to provide support to motivated high school students and their parents to assist them in achieving their higher education aspirations. Although it’s not required for the program, the bulk of students will be the first-generation to attend college in their family. The majority of students in the program are also Latino, which supports Metro State’s goal to become a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution.
WHY: While the prospect of seeking higher education may be overwhelming and perceived as unachievable to many, the program works to correct misperceptions by providing tools and information to make college ambitions a reality. For many students the “Metro Ready” visit, signifies the first time they will step foot on a college campus. The event is designed to help ensure Excel Pre-Collegiate students don’t fall through the cracks over the summer months.
Excel outreach counselors normally make weekly visits to area high schools throughout the year to assistant with college applications/enrollment, financial aid assistance, scholarship searching and application process, college essay support and bilingual (English/Spanish) information workshops for parents.
