Translation: Minor and Certificate

The Department of Modern Languages offers a Minor in Translation (21 credits) and a Spanish Translation Certificate (15 credits)

Minor in Translation Studies - IDP incubator

Have you studied a language other than English? Have you completed coursework equivalent to the Basic II level? Are you interested in the field of Translation?

Knowledge of a foreign language can open up at least two paths for you: you can become a certified translator/interpreter, or become a professional in the growing field of language services. Whether you decide to further hone your language skills or explore your options in the coordination of language services, the minor in Translation Studies will give you the foundation necessary to understand and competently address the complexities of effective, accurate and context-appropriate intercultural communication.

This highly customizable program is suitable for 3 distinct groups of learners:

  • Students with advanced language skills. MDL majors who are interested in a related-field minor are most likely to fit this description. The progression for advanced language students combines classes in linguistics, intercultural communication, translation theory, and hands-on translation practice. Students of Spanish who are pursuing the Certificate in Spanish Translation can upgrade to the minor in Translation Studies and earn both the certificate and the minor while taking a small number of extra classes.
  • Students who are at the beginning of their language studies. This group includes students who are about to achieve an Intermediate level in a foreign language, and have completed the basic level sequence (1010 and 1020). The progression for intermediate students will lead them through classes in linguistics, intercultural communication, translation theory, some basic translation practice, and Latin.
  • Students with limited or no previous exposure to a foreign language. This group includes students in their first or second semester of language studies. Similar to the intermediate-level students, their progression will lead them through classes in linguistics, intercultural communication, translation theory, some basic practice in the editing of translated texts, and Latin.
