Internships

  • Be a declared major or minor in the Journalism program (certain IDP students will be considered)
  • Be approved to undertake an internship by a professor in the program
  • Successfully complete JRN 2100

The JRN internship provides students with hands-on experience at a mass media outlet or public relations setting where students are able to use the skills learned in the classroom in a supervised, professional environment. Students work as writers, reporters, editors, public relations practitioners, convergent media specialists and photojournalists at newspapers, magazines, agencies, corporations, nonprofit entities and other media outlets.

Students may enroll for 3 credits of internship credit. This course may be repeated for a total of fifteen (15) credits.  The following formula is used to determine how much time the student must devote to the internship experience:

1 credit hour = 50 hours intern work

Once the internship is approved by a department professor or the chair, the student should meet with the proper Applied Learning Center representative to begin the required paperwork. The Applied Learning Center is located in Administration Building room 325. The phone number is 303-556-3290.
