Jan Embree-Bever Endowed Scholarship ($1,000 - $3,000)

Purpose:

Jan Embree-Bever worked in both direct and indirect service capacities in the juvenile justice system as well as the alcohol and drug treatment system. Jan wishes to assist students who are pursuing a career working with this special population.

Criteria:

The scholarship recipient shall:

  • Be a Human Services Major; High Risk Youth Studies Concentration
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Have financial need based on FAFSA
  • Be a new or returning student
  • Submit an essay stating why they are interested in pursuing a career working with high-risk youth.

Preference for the recipient to be a non-traditional, single parent.

Charles Branch Memorial Endowed Scholarship ($1,000-$2,000)

Purpose:

This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Charles Branch. Dr. Branch started his professional life as a jazz musician and high school band teacher in Kansas in 1952. He came to MSU Denver in 1978 as Dean of the School of Education. Over the years he held several other leadership positions, including Chair of the Human Services Department, Coordinator of the Center for High-Risk Youth Studies, and Dean of the School of Professional Studies. He was a tenured professor of both teacher education and human services. Dr. Branch’s area of expertise was applied behavior analysis; he believed in empowering students on their journey to academic success and real-world achievements.

Criteria:

The scholarship recipient shall:

  • Have declared a Human Services major (at least 12 semester hours each semester)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Be degree-seeking
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to the field of human services
  • Submit an essay that describes how they have made a positive change in their life and why they deserve this scholarship. Students must address how they meet the requirements and criteria for the scholarship. The essay should be approximately 500 words.

John E. Donohue & Donald Kubacki Memorial Endowed Scholarship ($500 - $1,500)

Purpose:

These funds are established to provide financial assistance to a student pursuing a Human Services degree with an emphasis in Addiction Studies. 

Criteria:

The scholarship recipient shall:

  • Meet the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and cannot be in default or owe any refund/repayment of federal, state, or institutional aid
  • Have financial need as determined by FAFSA / DAIA and the University’s Office Financial Aid and Scholarships
  • Be a Human Services major with an emphasis in Addiction Studies
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be enrolled in 12 credit hours
    • Preference is for students entering their junior or senior year.
    • Applicants with a history of chemical addiction must be alcohol/drug free for a minimum of two years.

Complete an essay in 500 words or less describing their desire to be an addiction professional, their philosophy on helping, and a description of two long term professional goals.

Behavioral Health Professional Preparation Project Scholarship and Stipend ($5,000)

Purpose:

These funds are established to support an interdisciplinary cohort that fosters community while aiding students as they explore career pathways that seeks to address community behavioral health needs.

Criteria:

In addition to fulfilling their program’s requirements for field work, scholars attend monthly cohort meetings to discuss topics impacting the behavioral health field. Scholars must spend 5-10 hours a month on cohort activities.

Behavioral Health Internship Stipend ($2,500 per semester)

Purpose:

MSU Denver is committed to meeting the financial needs of students who are addressing the behavioral health needs of the community.

Criteria:

The scholarship recipient shall:

  • Complete an unpaid internship in a behavioral health setting providing direct care to clients (outreach, case management, counseling, group facilitation, referrals to services, etc.)
  • Pursue a degree in Human Services (bachelors or masters), Integrative Health Care, Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, or Social Work (bachelors or masters).
  • Student is not a current recipient of another source of funding (Earn & Learn, Child Welfare stipend, HRSA, CoAccess, BHPPP, HICOP, DUHOP, etc.)
  • Student is not a previous recipient of the Anschutz Services-Response Stipend or BHPPP.
