Q&A with Carlin!

1. What has your journey been like after graduating from MSU Denver?
Since graduating about 10 years ago, I have experienced many different aspects of the hospitality industry. I have mainly worked in restaurants and hotels, although I also spent about 6 years importing and distributing wine in Colorado. Now I live in California and spent a summer working at a winery, which was a dream of mine.

2. Can you talk about your current role at Pacifica Hotel Company?
I started working at Sandcastle Hotel, in Pismo Beach, CA as a food and beverage manager before I transferred to the Wayfarer, a Hilton property. I am now managing their small restaurant, Schoolyard, close to Cal Poly! We cater to a very diverse group of guests, keeping me on my toes each day.

3. What does a typical workday look like for you?
Ha! A “typical” day in hospitality doesn’t exist… and that’s what makes it so exciting! Every day brings the opportunity to meet new people from around the globe. Some days, I’m working on the floor, assisting with banquets, moving kegs and cases of wine, or tackling paperwork. My favorite part is working on the floor, as I thrive on the interactions, conversations, and connections I get to build!

4. What are you passionate about in the work that you do?
I am deeply passionate about building connections and assisting people in crafting unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s guiding them to explore exciting adventures in the city or along the coast, recommending unique dining options in the area, or helping them bring their event visions to life, there is so much to love about hospitality. It can be challenging yet rewarding, and it’s truly special. When you love what you do, it never feels like work!

5. In what ways has your MSU Denver experience had an impact on your career and shaped who you are today?
My time at MSU taught me so much about the various facets of hospitality, helping me identify what truly matters to me. It’s a deeply personal journey. The professors all had industry experience, so they weren’t just delivering lectures; they shared invaluable real-world insights that resonated with me. This experience laid a solid foundation for my approach to learning and adapting. I embrace every opportunity to learn (I never say “no”) because I believe it’s essential for growth. Every day offers a chance to gain new knowledge! Whether working alongside someone new or seasoned, you can always discover a fresh perspective or share something novel with them.

6. What career advice would you give to current and prospective MSU Denver students?
Explore different opportunities. Embrace setbacks; each experience offers valuable lessons for the future. And if something doesn’t resonate with you, that’s ok too! Stay open-minded as you navigate various roles, be adaptable, and practice humility, and you will undoubtedly discover your true calling and be successful!
