Food for Thought

Friday mornings

Hospitality Learning Center - Auraria Campus

MSU Denver has teamed up with the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club in a major nutrition initiative called Food for Thought that provides "PowerSacks" of food each Friday to students at two Title I elementary schools in Denver.

Students from lower-income households qualify for the federally subsidized school lunch program, which helps meet their nutritional needs during the week. As for the weekends, “several studies have found that some students are unprepared to learn on Monday morning because sometimes the only meal they’ve had was on the last Friday” at school, says Michael Wray, director of restaurant management in the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events (HTE) and a Food for Thought organizer.

Food for Thought-Denver aims to bridge the weekend hunger gap for low income students in Denver; helping them to be successful in school by meeting their most basic needs.

Food for Thought Denver is a 100% volunteer effort and all funds raised are used to purchase food and supplies for the program. We rely on donations and volunteers to make our program work.
