Construction Project Management

Construction Project Management is an interdisciplinary major created to support a workforce initiative for the fast growing industry of construction. This major offers core classes along with a concentration in Computer Information Systems or Management.  There is an opportunity to receive apprenticeship credits that you can use in lieu of a minor.

  • A minor is required - minors cannot be declared in any department located in the College of Business
  • We recommend: Architecture, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Leadership Studies, and Spanish for your minor as these minors align beautifully with the information you learn from this degree
  • Students are required to take elective courses to complete their major and fulfill the graduation requirement of 120 credits
  • An industry internship is required for students who do not bring in the apprenticeship credits and the internship must be an approved construction industry placement

Apprenticeship Credit:

Students with a completed U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Office of Apprenticeship (OA) four-year Registered Construction Trades Apprenticeship and Journeyman’s credentials are awarded a block of 30 lower division semester credits that may be used in lieu of the required minor.  Apprenticeship credits are only applicable for the CPM major and may not be utilized in any other way at MSU Denver.  According to the Department of Labor[1]:

“The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Apprenticeship, works in conjunction with State Apprenticeship Agencies to administer the program nationally. These agencies are responsible for registering apprenticeship programs that meet federal and state standards; protecting the safety and welfare of apprentices; issuing nationally recognized and portable Certificates of Completion of Apprenticeship to apprentices; promoting the development of new programs through marketing and technical assistance; assuring that all programs provide high quality training; and assuring that all programs produce skilled and competent workers. In addition, a wide variety of stakeholders exist, including state organizations, industry associations, educational organizations (both secondary and post-secondary), workforce development organizations, economic development organizations, community-based organizations, and others. These stakeholders have a substantial interest in its success of Registered Apprenticeships.”


The Colorado Construction Job Market:

According to a Denver Post 2017 article[2], there is a massive shortage of construction workers in Colorado with over 95,000 jobs available.  This shortage created higher wages for those entering the construction job market.   The Construction Project Management program offers students the education and training to fill these positions. 

The Colorado Talent Pipeline Report 2016[3], identifies Top Jobs in Colorado as those that meet three criteria: projected high annual openings, above average growth rates, and offer a living wage. Out of all Top Jobs, Construction Trades has the 2nd highest share of projected job openings (14%) just behind Healthcare Practitioners and Technical (16%.) The Construction Trades ranked in the top 5 industries where the most STEM top jobs are.  A sample of job titles and salaries include:
