Semblance & Guised

Exhibition Dates: February 21 - April 13, 2013

Semblance, an exhibition of lens and time-based works that share the elements of performance, ritual and illusion. Artists: Sama Alshaibi, Neil Chowdhury, Kim Keever, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Laura Shill, and Janaina Tschäpe explore ambiguous boundaries between the real and the imagined.

Running in tandem with Semblance, is the world premiere of Guised, an international video exhibition curated by Sama Alshaibi, Associate Professor of Photography/Video Art, University of Arizona. Guised, a fox in sheep's clothing, enters with fantasy, humor and familiarity. The hidden and manipulated intentions of the seemingly benign nature of the show’s content require focus and imagination.  The seven projects contain a riddle that at first appearance offers a non-threateningtrajectory, but upon further examination, unfolds onto a far more pointed and often sinister implication. A celebration of the multiple uses of video artformats: mise-en-scène, the long shot, performance, stop motion, animation, collage and interactive, the exhibition is a nod to the multiplicious canon of time-based media in both historical andcontemporary forms.

Artists: Ninar Esber, Jovan Erfan, Gary Setzer, Coriana Close, Hala Ali and Lantian Xie, Larissa Sansour

The Emerging Artist Gallery will be devoted to work from MSU Denver students selected from a portfolio review. Selection was based on quality of the work and relevance to the exhibition theme.
