Dr. Bruce-Sanford is Executive Director at the Center, and a Licensed Staff Psychologist. She has an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Howard University. Her professional background includes conducting both individual and group psychotherapy with counseling center populations, community mental health, as well as academic teaching at both small and large institutions. Her areas of interest and expertise include diversity programming, group work,ethics, supervision, working with biracial/multiracial students, peer education, women's issues, crisis management, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, veterans, relationship issues, and helping non-traditional students get back on track. Her psychotherapeutic work is informed by psychodynamic, systems, and multicultural perspectives.

Bio:

Dr. Lee is the Assistant Director at the Center. He is also a Licensed Staff Psychologist. He received his MA and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Houston. His background includes both inpatient and outpatient individual and group psychotherapy with persons of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds at counseling centers and community mental health centers. He has also had some academic teaching experience. His areas of interest and expertise include dual-diagnoses, development of healthy identity and character, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, LGBTQ populations, and American Indian issues in treatment; trauma, crisis management, and cross-cultural issues. He is certified in EMDR treatment.

Bio:

Dr. Gornell is a Staff Psychologist at the Counseling Center.  He holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. He is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Colorado and is also Board Certified in Clinical Psychology.  He is listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Practicing as a psychologist since 1996 Dr. Gornell has worked with children, adolescents and adults who present with a variety of concerns. His professional experience includes working in community mental health and at a hospital based counseling center.  He has also taught as an adjunct instructor for doctoral programs in Illinois and Colorado. His areas of interest include mindfulness based approaches to therapy, men’s issues, anxiety and spirituality and therapy.

Dr. Burkhart is a Staff Psychologist at the Counseling Center. She received her master's degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato, and her Ph.D. from Kent State University in Ohio. She has experience in both university counseling centers and in mental health agencies. She has worked with individuals of all ages, but has a special interest in working with persons dealing with the developmental issues encountered in college. Other areas of interest include women's issues, LGBTQ issues, trauma, and psychotherapy supervision.

Dr. Malmon is a Senior Staff Psychologist at the Center.  He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology – Los Angeles.  He has experience in both inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, and has over twenty years of experience working in college/university mental health.  He specializes in cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety and depression.  His other areas of professional interest and expertise include working with diverse populations, crisis management, relationship issues, stress management, and sex addiction.

Bio:

Dr. Tuakoi earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Rockies (UoR) in Colorado Springs, formerly known as the Colorado School of Professional Psychology. She completed her internship at the Sol Vista Youth Correctional Facility and worked at the Colorado State Penitentiary and Denver Women’s Correctional Facility shortly thereafter. Dr. Tuakoi worked with the mentally ill incarcerated population at aforementioned facilities. She then worked with the mentally ill population at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo; she worked primarily with the population found Incompetent to Proceed per criminal charges incurred. More recently, she worked with the Intellectually and Developmentally Delayed population at the Pueblo Regional Center. She is a strong generalist who works with a variety of clinical issues.

Bio:

Dr. Edwards is a Staff Psychologist at the Counseling Center. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Edwards has committed herself to working in settings that provide care to underserved communities, including medical centers and educational institutions. Prior to joining the Counseling Center staff at MSU Denver, Dr. Edwards oversaw the clinical services offered to students enrolled at a community college in Chicago. During her 5-year tenure in that position, she supervised doctoral-level graduate interns completing their diagnostic and therapy practicum at the center. Dr. Edwards’s areas of professional interest include first generation students, acculturation, interpersonal violence, supervision of graduate students, and psychoeducational evaluations.

Bio:

Dr. Schoech earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Walden University. She received her Master’s degree from Regis University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Dr. Schoech’s primary tenure was with Rocky Mountain Human Services (formerly Denver Options) providing therapy and neuropsychological testing for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. She also worked part-time with a small clinic providing substance abuse, domestic violence and anger management therapy to people coming out of the prison or probation system. Dr. Schoech’s areas of professional interest include treatment for trauma and PTSD, substance abuse, woman’s issues, ADHD, and personality disorders. She is trained in EMDR and Brain Spotting.
