52nd Anniversary of the Department of Chicana/o Studies

The Department of Chicana/o Studies celebrated 52 years on Wednesday, October 12, 2022!

The day’s activities included a welcome and lunch, a Chairs’ Plática featuring current Chair, Dr. Adriana Nieto and former chairs Dr. Ramon Del Castillo, Dr. Luis Torres, Dr. Irene Blea and an intergenerational panel. The event concluded with an evening fiesta and scholarship fundraiser.

The Department also collected memorabilia and personal archives from past students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members during the celebration. These items will also be used to document the history of Chicano/a Studies at MSU Denver.

All activities were in St. Cajetans and all MSU Denver students, staff and faculty, community members, and alumni were invited to attend.

Torn between your desire for a quality, broad based liberal arts education and your commitment to social justice?

Here’s a degree that provides both! Born out of the civil-rights movement, the Department of Chicana/o Studies at MSU Denver is rooted in community and offers degrees you can’t get anywhere else in Colorado. Through our degrees, you’ll have access to a rich selection of events and internships to enhance your professional career. We’ll take you on an immersive journey through history to discover Chicana/o culture and examine the impact it has had in today’s society.

As a Chicana/o Studies major, you’ll also dissect many of the problems that Latina/o communities face in these tumultuous times and come up with practical solutions. Students at Denver’s South, West and North High Schools can enroll concurrently to get a head start on their college careers. Your experiences outside the classroom will help you develop a deep sense of community and give you an intimate view of where and how you can help effectively. Our program is rooted in social justice, and we’re proud to share the same core values as MSU Denver’s leadership.

A degree in this social science provides you with an intellectual and professional foundation to succeed in any career path. A concentration in Cultural Studies pairs well with art-related fields, and a teaching licensure will help get your foot in the door if you want to teach. Our grads have also been accepted into graduate programs and law schools throughout the country. No matter what road you choose to run, the Department of Chicana/o Studies at MSU Denver is a great place to start your marathon.

Richard T. and Virginia M. Castro Distinguished Visiting Professorship

Originally started as the Richard T. Castro Distinguished Visiting Professorship was initiated in 1997 to foster multiculturalism, diversity, and academic excellence at Metropolitan State University of Denver. In 2021 the name changed to Richard T. and Virginia M. Castro Distinguished Visiting Professorship to recognize the labor and passion that Virginia Castro brought to the Chicano movement in Denver with Richard. The professorship brings renowned Latinx scholars, artists, and leaders of distinction to MSU Denver to conduct classes, seminars, performances, and lectures for students, faculty, staff, and the larger Denver community.
