Faculty Mentoring at MSU Denver

At MSU Denver, we seek to provide incoming faculty with an innovative, flexible, intentional, voluntary, and faculty-driven framework within which mentoring can occur. MSU Denver encourages faculty members at all stages of their academic careers to build strong, productive and substantive networks of mentoring partners who can address a wide variety of career competencies. New faculty are paired with “guides” who help negotiate the institutional culture, who aide in identifying multiple potential sources of mentoring, and who themselves might become authentic mentors. Our framework for mentoring at MSU Denver combines a close core relationship between the New Faculty Member and the Faculty Guide with an intentional approach to identifying and building multiple networks of mutual mentoring.

The mentoring framework features five dimensions that enable the New Faculty Member, the Faculty Guide, and additional mentors to tailor relationships to specific needs and interests:

  • Intended beneficiaries 
  • Locus of control
  • Characteristics of the mentoring relationship
  • Topics to be addressed
  • Actions to take

MSU Denver seeks to support the realization of healthy mentoring relationships within the framework by: 

  • identifying multiple sources of professional support.
  • identifying “near peers” and role models to enhance the mentoring relationship.
  • identifying mentoring partners outside of faculty ranks.
  • offering diverse faculty development activities such as faculty learning communities, writing circles, peer instructional coaching, workshops, conferences, and institutes.
  • assisting with the identification of potential mentoring partners at other area campuses.
  • identifying external scholars who can serve as mentors and models for MSU Denver faculty, and connecting with these scholars through intentional travel and conference attendance.
  • partnering with business groups and external professionals who may enhance the scholarly activity and professional development of MSU Denver faculty.

 

MSU Denver commits to supporting faculty who participate in this framework by:

 

  • providing training and informational opportunities for Faculty Guides.
  • providing support, training, and information on Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion (RTP) issues through the Center for Faculty Excellence.
  • fostering effective communication between departments, schools, and the University on issues surrounding career development at MSU Denver.
  • establishing and maintaining a reasonable process of selection and pairing.
