Withdraw Information

Why should I withdraw?

A course grade of W does not impact your cumulative or term GPA.  A course grade of F, negatively impacts your GPA.  For example, if you are taking two classes this semester and have a B in one class and an F in the other, your term GPA will be a 1.5.  If you withdraw from the class instead of taking the F, your term GPA would be a 3.0.  If you opt to take the F, we recommend repeating the course the following semester.  We have automatic grade replacement and this will help boost your GPA.

I’m considering withdrawing from my class what should I do? 

1. Time permitting, talk to your instructor to see if you can turn in late work, get extra credit, or still pass the class. If you are currently passing the class but are experiencing circumstances preventing you from finishing, ask your instructor about an Incomplete.
2. If using Financial Aid or GI Bill/Tuition Assistance, contact the Financial Aid or Veteran’s Office to see if there will be any impact to your package/awards
3. Talk to an Academic Advisor in the Advising Center (Room 210). If you are still passing the class, it may be better for you to take a D instead of withdrawing (especially if it is a prerequisite for Business Core classes).  If you need to be connected to other resources, the Counseling Center, Access Center, CARE Team, etc., we can help!

Does a W impact my Financial Aid, Scholarship, or Grants?  

Possibly.  The Financial Aid Office tracks students’ completion rates and a W counts against your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).  You should reach out to the Financial Aid Office at 303-556-8593 or go in-person to JSSB Suite 130 with questions (your academic advisor does not have access to your financial aid records and can’t assist you).  You can also find information on-line here: https://www.msudenver.edu/financial-aid/financial-aid-policy/.

How do I withdraw from a class? 

You can find instructions here: https://www.msudenver.edu/registrar/student/drop-and-withdrawal/.  If you have a registration hold, you need to have the hold temporarily removed first.  See below for instructions on clearing holds or if you run into technical issues ahead of the deadline.

I’m on Academic Probation, should I withdraw from my class?

If you are on probation and failing a class, in most circumstances, you should withdraw from your class to avoid being put on academic suspension.  Remember, you must have a 2.2 Term GPA to avoid suspension (this is a C+ average in your classes).  If you are using any type of financial aid or the GI Bill, you should check with the Financial Aid or Veterans Office before deciding to withdraw.

I’m a Veteran or Active-Duty Military Student, should I withdraw from my class?

You should not withdraw from a class without speaking to the VA Office.  In many cases if you withdraw, you will end up owing money back.

Will I get a course refund?

No, the 50% refund date was 4 Sep.

I have a Registration Hold on my account that is preventing me from withdrawing. 

What do I do?  You must contact the office responsible for putting the hold on your account to temporarily lift it so you can withdraw.  You can find the list of holds/offices here: https://www.msudenver.edu/registrar/student/holds/.  Academic Advisors can only clear General Studies holds.  You can come to the advising center to get assistance for these holds.  Do not email your advisor at the last minute, otherwise you may be disappointed.  

I waited to withdraw and am now running into technical or other issues preventing me from withdrawing, what do I do? 

If during regular hours, call the Registrar’s Office at (303) 556-3991.  If it’s after hours, take pictures, screen shots, etc., of the errors that you are getting that are preventing you from withdrawing and email them to [email protected].  You must have proof you tried to withdraw BEFORE the deadline.

I missed the Withdraw Deadline, can I still withdraw?

No.  If there were extenuating circumstances this semester (death in the family, hospitalization, mental health care, etc.), you may be eligible for an Administrative Withdraw.  You can learn about AWs here: https://www.msudenver.edu/registrar/student/administrative-withdrawal/ or by talking with your academic advisor.
