Student Intervention Services

Student Intervention Services (SIS) works with students who have a cumulative GPA below a 2.0. SIS also receives the academic suspension appeals for the review of the Academic Review Committee, and administers the Academic Alert Program which provides mid-term grade information for students.

Below, you'll find student status definitions and SIS Contact information. Probation and Suspension tutorial instructions are linked in the menu bar to the left.

A quick reference sheet on academic status can be found here as well Academic Status Definitions and Impact

A student is deemed to be making satisfactory progress toward his/her academic goal if the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.

This student is deemed to be in academic good standing with the institution.

A student in good standing whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 will be placed on academic warning status with the institution.

A student will be removed from this warning status and return to good standing if he/she achieves a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of the warning semester.

A student who fails to achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of his/her semester on warning status will be placed on academic probation status with the institution.

A student will remain on academic probation status for no more than three semesters as long as they have a cumulative GPA below 2.00 and is making progress toward good standing. A student is removed from academic probation status and is returned to good standing the semester after they achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00.

While a student is on academic probation status, they must make progress toward good standing with the institution by adhering to the following conditions:

  • Must achieve a semester GPA of 2.20 or higher,

  • Must not register for more than 13 credit hours per semester for fall and spring and, if attending summer semester, no more than 6 credit hours for summer,

  • Must register for and complete a minimum of 3 credit hours for fall and spring, and

  • Must participate in activities as recommended by the office of Student Intervention Services. This may include registering for certain classes, repeating courses, tutoring and other activities.

While on academic probation status a student will not be allowed to register for successive semesters without verification of compliance with the conditions aforementioned.

If a student remains on probation status for three semesters and has not made progress toward good standing, that student will be subject to Academic Suspension.

A student on academic probation not making progress toward good standing with the institution will be prohibited from registering at the institution for one calendar year and will be placed on academic suspension status.

Students on academic suspension status may elect to appeal the decision through a suspension appeal application. The suspension appeal application will be submitted to the Director of Student Intervention Services who will deliver the request to the Student Academic Review Committee. The appeal will be reviewed and the student will be notified of the final decision. A student may appeal a suspension, at most, two times in his/her academic career at MSU Denver.

A student on probation status whose cumulative GPA remains below a 2.00 after three or more semesters will have their academic progress reviewed at the end of each semester by the Student Academic Review Committee to determine whether the they should be placed on suspension.

In both cases, the decision of the Student Academic Review Committee is final. Any student returning to MSU Denver after the one calendar year suspension must reapply and will be readmitted to MSU Denver on academic probation status. For these students, all probation status conditions, as outlined above, will apply.
